Press Release Oct 21, 2011

Montgomery County Sheriff Robert Dierks announced that a 7 year-old rural Independence girl was struck by a vehicle this morning as she was trying to board a school bus early this morning.

Sheriff Dierks stated that Emily G. Myers was struck by a 1993 Ford Aerostar van driven by Joseph Graham at approximately 7:15 A.M. this morning on C.R. 5000 near C.R. 4900. Sheriff Dierks stated that the school bus pulled up in front of Myers residence and had activated it's flashing red lights but had not put out the STOP sign yet. Dierks stated that the bus drivers saw the Ford van coming towards the school bus and tried to stop the children from entering the roadway, however Myers stepped out into the road and was struck by the Graham vehicle.

Sheriff Dierks stated that Myers was transported by Cherryvale EMS to Labette County Medical Center in Parsons where she is being treated. Dierks stated that at this time it appears that Myers is in good condition and is being treated at LCMC.

Sheriff Dierks wants to remind everyone to be on the lookout for children entering the roadway, especially around school buses and to slow down anytime a school bus is near.
